Fraternity History On September 11, 1865, three young former confederate soldiers gathered together in Richmond , Virginia and founded the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity. As cadets at Virginia Military Institute during the Civil Was, these three young men had witnessed firsthand the bitter conflict, which had torn the nation apart. Their objective in forming Alpha Tau Omega was to heal the sectional differences between the North and the South and to bring young men of both regions together to strive for the improvement of all society. Though experiencing growing pains at first, gradually Alpha Tau Omega succeeded in promoting its principles of peace and brotherhood throughout the United States . The immediate aims of the founders were realized in 1881 when the first chapter north of the Mason-Dixon Line was founded at the University of Pennsylvania . Since then, through strong guidance and leadership Alpha Tau Omega has become a tremendous force on college campuses throughout the country. Men such as N. Wiley Thomas, Claude T. Reno, Harry L. Bird, and Joseph R. Anderson, along with scores of other fine men have worked diligently since its founding to make Alpha Tau Omega as strong as it is today. Each chapter is truly pledged to practice and promote the ideals of our brotherhood. With These goals in mind, Alpha Tau Omega casts its eye confidently and eagerly towards the future. Pledging ATΩ The goal of Alpha Tau Omega's pledge program is simple and forthright. The program serves to acclimate the potential member to the ideals that govern our brotherhood, to teach the pledge the facts he needs to know to become an active member, and to promote friendship among the new members and between new member and Brother. As a Tau, one can excel as a scholar, a leader, a citizen, and an athlete. But most importantly, he at all times must conduct himself as a gentleman. Gentlemanly conduct is an ideal the Brothers of Alpha Tau Omega take seriously. The Brothers of Alpha Tau Omega feel that hazing serves to alienate and degrade new members, therefore not serving to fulfill the goal of acclimation nor demonstrating gentlemanly conduct. A new member, therefore, is treated as a brother from the start and is not asked or encouraged to do embarrassing or harmful acts. The philosophy of pledging Alpha Tau Omega is that a new member works with the Brothers not for them. Being a pledge, however, does carry many responsibilities and is a daily commitment. The pledge class participates in many chapter events, is responsible for organizing an event during the current semester, and pledge tests that cover basic knowledge of the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity. |
